Keep on truckin'

One of the things I love about toy photography is that you never really know what you're going to find when you head out with a camera and a toy.
This shoot happened during a family day out to Erddig Hall and Gardens in Wrexham.

While everyone else was enjoying the grounds, I had my little Playmobil Ford F-150 Raptor tucked away in my bag, just in case I spotted an opportunity.
As it turned out, Erddig was the perfect place for an adventure.

The gardens and woodland areas are full of character. Everywhere I looked there seemed to be another location that could become a landscape for the truck. Fallen trees became mountain trails, moss-covered logs became rugged hillsides and the streams looked like wild rivers waiting to be crossed.

The thing I really like about this little Ford is how much personality it has. It shouldn't surprise me really—the real F-150 Raptor is built for adventure and somehow the Playmobil version captures that same spirit. Put it on a fallen branch or beside a flowing stream and it instantly looks like it belongs there.

One minute it looked like it was carefully navigating a river crossing, the next it was chugging up a dusty, rocky canyon searching for the next challenge. The bright blue colour stood out brilliantly against the greens and browns of the woodland, and the natural surroundings really brought the truck to life.

That's one of the reasons I enjoy shooting outdoors so much. Nature does most of the hard work for you. A patch of moss suddenly becomes a vast landscape. A few inches of water becomes a raging river. Through the camera lens, everything feels bigger and more adventurous than it really is.

Looking back through the photos afterwards, I realised that the best part wasn't necessarily getting the shots. It was the experience itself. Spending time outdoors with the family, exploring somewhere new and finding little pockets of inspiration along the way.

Those are often the shoots that turn out best.

No complicated setups.
No grand plan.
Just a toy, a camera and a bit of imagination.
And for a few hours at Erddig Hall, this little blue Ford F-150 Raptor felt like the star of its own off-road adventure.

I can't wait to take the rest of the Playmobil 4-wheeled gang on their adventures.
